Cutting and shredding

Post-consumer textile waste can be fed into the shredding process sorted by colour and material as well as unsorted. Textiles are usually cut into small pieces in the mechanical shredding process by cutting machines or shredding mills for further processing. As they often contain impurities such as buttons, zips, nails or other foreign bodies, these must be removed afterwards to ensure the quality of the recycled fibers.

From fiber to sliver

The fiber bales from the mechanical recycling process are opened in a fiber opening machine to loosen clumps and untangle the fibers. Impurities such as dust and foreign bodies are then removed. Afterwards the cleaned and opened fibers are blended and passed through a carding machine to further loosen, disentangle and parallelise the fibers.  As a result a fiber web is formed, which is further processed and compacted to produce an uniform fiber structure. The final card sliver, which is a narrow, flat band of aligned fibers, can be spun into a variety of yarns.
